COLOMBO : The telecom regulatory authority of Srilanka has blocked access to social media sites such as Facebook, Whatsapp, Instagram however, some users says they have been able to use twitter.

The block came due to the ongoing Anti-Muslim violence by Buddhists in Kandy District of Sri Lanka. Buddhist Mobs have been attacking mosques and businesses belonging to Muslims.

Cabinet Spokesman Rajitha Senaratne told colleagues that authorities has requested service providers to block social messaging programs following posts seemed on Facebook calling for attacks on Muslims.

“The director general (of TRC) will notify all of the readers about Blocking Facebook, Viber, also Whatsapp for 72 hours,” a TRC official said.
