Races Stack Up For Greer County Offices

The filing period for those seeking public office opened Monday and there are several races stacking up that affects citizens in our area. The Primary will be July 27 with the Runoff (if necessary) to be held on August 24. The General Election will be Tuesday, November 2.

Two County Commissioner offices, the Greer County Assessor and the Greer County Treasurer are all on the ballot this year and as of Tuesday at 3:00 there had been 3 file for County Commissioner in District 1 and 1 file for the position in District 3. There has been 1 filing for Greer County Assessor and 2 for Greer County Treasurer.

Greer County Treasurer

Donna Bull

Other races of interest in the county are for Associate District Judge and State Representative in District 60 and District 52.

Incumbent Danny Deaver has filed for Greer County Associate District Judge. Incumbent Purcy D. Walker has filed for District 60 State Representative and Republican Incumbent, Charles Ortega has filed for District 52 which includes citizens in the Granite Area. District 3 Judge, Richard Darby has filed for reelection and John Wampler filed for reelection for District 3 District Attorney.

There are many offices open statewide and there is no lack of candidates in the big races such as Governor, Lt. Governor and one that will cause a lot of interest in the Superintendent of Public Education, an office which has been held by Sandy Garrett who decided to not seek office this time around.

Current Lt. Governor Jari Askins and Drew Edmonson are on the Democrat ticket for Governor while Roger Jackson, Mary Fallin and Randy Brogdon all seek the Republican nomination of the office.

Seeking the office of Lt. Governor are Democrat Kenneth Corn and Republican Bernie Adler.

Democrats Jerry Combrink and Susan Paddack, both Democrats and Independent, Richard Cooper are on the ballot for Superintendent of Public Education.

The U.S. Senate race has incumbent Tom Coburn in a three way race for the Republican nomination against Republican candidates Evelyn Rogers and Lewis Spring. One Democrat, Jim Rogers, has also filed for the office.

The filing period for office runs through Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. The candidates listed above are as of 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday. An updated list of candidates will be printed next week.
