People have no idea just how much work goes into a rodeo performance. It takes more than just setting a date and hiring a stock contractor. The weeks and months of preparation pretty much go unnoticed. But every year, the Mangum Mounties work hard to improve the rodeo and make it something of which our community can be proud.

This year they went to an open rodeo, called the Top 9 Rodeo series which is a part of the Hext Rodeo Stock Contractor of Canadian, Texas.

The 2-night event not only takes time in preparation, but also calls on each member of the Mangum Mounties to be willing to go the extra mile as the rodeo is actually taking place. You can see the men and women in their white shirts as they help the participants, load animals into the chutes and whatever else needs to be done, often staying at the arena until 3 a.m. after each performance.

This year’s rodeo was certainly top notch, due in part to their efforts.

A new feature this year was the youth rodeo which began at 7 each night and allowed future cowboys and cowgirls the chance to hone their skills in various events.

Then it was on to the adult rodeo that had a lot of exciting moments for the fans in attendance. From the bareback and saddle bronc riding, to steer wrestling and roping events, from barrel racing to the always exciting bull riding, this year’s rodeo had it all, plus there entire community got involved and made it possible to pay these cowboys and cowgirls some of the best prize money in recent years. $8,000 in added money plus the money from the entry fees allowed for a total payout of $18,833.59.
